Missed Opportunities

Oil on Canvas, 18"x24"

2025

This piece is inspired by the fig monologue in Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. I always wanted to be everything, picking up new identities through all my moving and life wandering. Growing up meant facing the harsh reality of narrowing down my career and interests and watching the opportunities of being someone else, doing some other career, or nurturing some other hobby simply became less and less probabilistic. Love, loss, trauma moved me further and further away from the vision I had created in my youth, and I came to understand Plath's monologue to a much deeper extent than I was capable before. This is an ode to the missed opportunities, and the death of the idealized version of my life that seizes to exist in any other place than my head.
